Take a look at soda bottles. They come in liters and half liters. The liter is 33.8 ounces. (Hint: A quarter is 32 ounces.)

If you are a man the next time you go to the restroom and use a urnal notice the top. Sometimes you will see imprinted on the top of it 1GAL/3.8L..... That is the flush rate amount, it is also a conversion chart.

Nobody uses gallons anymore except the US. The US gallon didn't even match with anyone else when they did use them in Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. If you talk to someone old enough to remember 'the old days', they measured mileage in Imperial gallons here, so I remember my 57 Chev that got 25mpg. That would be about 20mpg to an American. Currency conversion is only relevant to tourists, as a buck is a buck. If you work for $10 an hour, a buck a litre is bloody expensive regardless of where you live. And to confuse everyone even more, we use 'fuel economy' instead of 'mileage' now. 10.0 means you use 10 litres to go 100km. The lower the number the better! 10.0 = roughly 23mpg to an American

I thought ours is bad at 2.599 a gal...

Good Lord what a foolish ruckus!
We Canadians use the litre ... period. Not Imp. Gallons which were dropped 20+ years ago, Imp. Litres which don't exist or anything else. The current price of gas across the street at the E$$O & $hell stations is $101.9 / litre.
The conversion factor for most people when quickly computing is 3.8 litres to a US Gallon (the only "gallon" left. SO, 101.9 x 3.8 = $3.87 per US Gallon. It's SO easy.
I have many american friends and relatives who are dear to me, but really now... you gotta think outside the continental 48 states, the rest of the world is much bigger, and we don't use US measure in international trade. Even your speed limits in the boarder cities and states are frequently posted in both mph and kph. Metric is coming slowly but certainly as international trade increasingly demands it. Thats my two cents.. NO! Thats my deci-rant.

Simplicity of the metric system if we could have grown up with it and used only materials designed for it. Decimal like money, except money doesn't have 100+ years of history it has to keep.

roughly 3.8, but what difference does it make? The price is high, we have done it to ourselves, and just because the unit of measure is different, if you fill up, you fill up litres or gallons

Well, if you round it up, 4 liters will give you one gallon. So, if they are paying $1.20 per liter, then our ways of doing things are cheaper.

If 3.7854 litres = 1 US gallon and $1.1587 CAD = $1.00 USD, then the US equivalent "price per gallon" for gas in Toronto would be US$2.76 to US$3.25 per US gallon (CA$0.83 to CA$0.99 per litre). Bottom line, gas is still a little cheaper in the US. And cheapest in NJ (on average).

4:1 is the quick conversion. If you don't need/care about accuracy too much, then it's close enough to get an idea... Trying to figure converted prices?
Wasn't the US supposed to switch to metric at one time? Just a side-thought.

Oops made a mistake - 45.46 liters at .92 = $41.82, so a gallon equivalent is $4.18 not $4.54. Thought that was a little off.

Since I have relatives in Canada and go there somewhat frequently, here's how I convert:
10 US gallons = 37.85 liters. If the Canadian price per liter is .92, multiply 37.85 x .92. That equals $34.82 or $3.48 per gallon. Now go to a currency conversion calculator and convert $3.48 CDN to US, and that will give you the US price per gallon.
Imperial gallons don't really enter into it unless you're Canadian, but it works the same way. 10 CDN gallons = 45.46 liters or $4.54 CDN.
When the average Canadian price was $1.25 per liter last fall, our neighbors to the north were paying $5.68 CDN per gallon. (45.45 x 1.25 divide by 10). That's about $4.85 US at $1.17 exchange rate.

>m1gunr:"42 gallons = 11.1 litres. If Canadian gas is 83.4 cents a litre ($3.15gal) it will cost me $132.30 Canadian or $115.30 USD"
Incorrect: 42 gallons = 159.6 litres (3.8 litres/gallon). You divided the two numbers - you should have multiplied them.
If gas is 83.4 cents a litre that would make it $3.17 per gallon, not $3.15 as you stated. That means that it would cost you CDN$133.14 to fill your tank, not $132.30 as you stated..not sure how much that is in US funds.
$.834 x 159.6 litres = $133.1065 $3.17 x 42 gallons = $133.14
$3.17 gallon / 3.8 litres = CDN$.8342105 per litre.Your point was well received...the facts were slightly off.
